“Charming but Overpriced”

27 Maggio 2008

We booked this hotel when we arrived in Milan. We needed something close to the airport, and were pleased with the free shuttle and distance to the hotel (under 20 minutes). The area seemed rural/suburban and quite safe. There is a Metro stop within walking distance of the hotel.

The hotel has an old-world charm. It is very basic, and yes, overpriced. Our room was clean, had no air conditioning and had a very tiny shower with unreliable hot water.

Aside from 4-5 star properties, places like La Pista are par for the course in many parts of Europe. I came to La Pista with lower expectations and was not disappointed. However, had I planned ahead I probably could have found a property with better "value" for the price paid (I think we paid about 90 Euros during low season).

The room overlooked a street (not a busy street) and was noisy, but hearing the locals below helped me remember some of the Italian I learned in college. The building itself is very old (maybe early 20th century) and the decor was probably circa 1950s.

The best part of our visit was dinner at the hotel restaurant. This was the best food I have ever eaten. Ever. The food was cooked in a wood fired oven and had the most amazing flavor. Everything tasted very fresh and even the house table wine was delicious. Mmmm. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Breakfast was a croissant with coffee and orange juice and yogurt.

Overall, La Pista was an average property to which I would return if I could get a better rate.
